THEMABeschreibung
TEXTThe brewing interests of St. Louis have attained proportions of enormous magnitude, and it is a nationally known fact, that the lager beer brewed here has an exceptional flavor and piquancy nowhere else duplicated. One of the leading and oldest established breweries here is that of Charles G. Stifel. It was started in 1849 by Mr. Charles G. Stifel, a master brewer of marked skill and ability, and one whose efforts were early rewarded with a large and flourishing trade. The premises had to be repeatedly enlarged, and in 1879 the "Charles G. Stifel's Brewing Co." was duly organized, Mr. Otto F. Stifel, son of the founder, becoming the general manager. The company continued to do an annually enlarging business, and in 1889 became consolidated with the St. Louis Brewing Association, the latter having a capital of $10,000,000. Mr. Stifel is the youngest official of the St. Louis Brewing Association, and holds the office of first vice-president in the Association. Mr. Stifel still retains the en tire management of this brewery, which occupies a very desirable location on Fourteenth and Howard streets. The buildings are all new, handsome and substantial structures, specially planned for the purpose, and comprise the brewery proper, five stories high, malt house of five stories, grain elevators, ice houses, engine house, stables, cooperage, etc. The front of these premises presents the handsomest appearance of any in St. Louis, and the dimensions are 350x150 feet. The equipment is one of the best in use, all of modern design and large capacity, including a hundred horse power engine, two Consolidated ice machines of fifty tons' capacity per day each; elevators of 150,000 bushels' capacity, and immense mash tubs, kettle and vats, the brewery having an annual capacity of 100,000 barrels. The malt house turns out 1,000 bushels per day, and Mr. Stifel, using his own malt, choicest hops and clearest water, and utilizing all the most improved processes, is turning out a splendid quality of lager, absolutely pure, and a wholesome, nutritious tonic beverage, preferred wherever sold. The brewery has large cellarage, and all beer is kept in a cool, even temperature the required length of time to become true "lager." One hundred hands are employed in the various departments of the business, and forty-five horses are required for delivering. Mr. Stifel was born, and raised in St. Louis, and was brought up to the business in which he has achieved such a creditable and substantial success. He is universally popular and respected, and has contributed materially to the welfare of this great center of commerce and industry.
