TEXTThe famous Pickel Marble and Granite Company's business was founded in 1861 by Mr. William Pickel, and he early developed a flourishing trade. In 1875 the business was incorporated as a joint stock company, with Mr. William Pickel as president and Mr. Jacob Mueller, Jr., as secretary. The company started with a capital of 50,000, subsequently increased to 75,000, while the company's plant is the most complete in the United States. The company has occupied its present main works, on North Broadway, for the past fifteen years. The works are 100x250 feet in dimensions. The plant includes four sets of saws and numerous rubbers and polishers, operated by a sixty-five horse-power engine. The company also has branch works at Nos. 2015 to 2027 Gratiot street. The company are direct importers of the finest Italian marbles and Scotch granites; also securing the best of Vermont and Tennessee white and variegated marbles. They employ skilled designers, and make a specialty of fine cemetery work, inclusive of sculpture, monumental and carved work. Interior marble work, mantels, mosaic, tiling, etc., is another prominent specialty, and in which line the company has achieved national distinction and developed an enormous trade. The company also deals extensively in marbleized slate and wood mantels, grates and open fire-places. Mr. Pickel is a native of Germany, resident in St. Louis since 1860, and is a popular and respected citizen and business man. Mr. Mueller is a native of St. Louis, and a young and energetic business man. The company have done work on the court houses at Columbia City, Ind., and Lincoln, Neb.; the German National Bank, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Anheuser National Bank, St. Louis, Mo.; Merchants National Bank, St. Paul, Minn.; Boatman's Savings Bank, St. Louis, Mo.; Bank of Commerce, St. Louis, Mo.; the Southern Hotel, St. Louis, Mo.; the Capitol Building at Lincoln, Neb.; the Germania Life Insurance Building, St. Paul, Minn., and the Odd Fellows' Building, St. Louis, Mo.
