1875 Gründung als Stahlbauunternehmen durch Samuel Erskine und J. Howarth unter der Firma "Howarth Erskine & Co.". Man spezialisiert sich auf Eisen- und Stahlkonstruktionen und auf den Bau von Wasserwerken.
1905 Gründung eines Zweigwerks von "Howarth Erskine" in Rangun
August 1907 "Howarth Erskine" vollendet die Latter Street Wharf für die Port Trust Commission (vmtl. in Rangun). - Sie führen auch Reparaturen an der Mogul Street Wharf und der Sule Pagoda Wharf durch.
1912 Zusammenschluß mit "Riley Hargreaves & Co." (gegr. 1865) zu "United Engineers Limited"

TEXTThroughout the East, the engineering firm of Messrs. Howarth Erskine, Ltd., is well known. It has a record extending over some thirty years, and a capital of three millions Straits dollars. A branch was established in Rangoon in 1905, and since that date it has completed some important undertakings. The first large contract was for the construction of the Latter Street Wharf for the Port Trust Commission. This was completed in August, 1907. Messrs. Howarth Erskine, Ltd., also executed repairs to the Mogul Street Wharf, and the Sule Pagoda Wharf, and built a number of transit sheds and godowns for the Port Trust. The American Baptist Mission entrusted them with the erection of their Memorial Church, and the municipality have on different occasions commissioned them to carry out municipal works, including the construction of a municipal market. Messrs. Howarth Erskine, Ltd., have supplied and erected steel framing for some of the largest buildings in Rangoon, including Sofaeras Buildings, Balthazaras Buildings, and Finlay Flemingas Building, and they built the handsome four-storeyed building occupied by Messrs. J. W. Darwood e Co. Contracts have also been carried out for the Public Works Department, and the Burma Railways. At Akyab the firm have constructed a wharf, and at the present time they are engaged in extensive works for the Rangoon Port Trust, the Rangoon Municipality, and the Public Works Department of the Government, as well as for several large private undertakings. The manager for Burma is Mr. J. P. Hodgson, A.M.I.C.E., who started his professional training some fourteen years ago, under Mr. John J. Webster, M.Inst.C.E., of Westminster. While in Mr. Websteras service, he was engaged in preparing various engineering schemes for the constructon of bridges, piers, harbour work, and c. Among these may be mentioned a scheme for connecting the towns of Widnes and Runcorn, on opposite sides of the River Mersey, by means of a transporter bridge, which had the longest single span of any bridge in England. After serving with Mr. Webster about eight years, Mr. Hodgson acted for a firm of contractors as engineer and manager on several important engineering works, including the construction of reservoirs for the water supplies of Bradford and Carlisle, and the erection of bridges for the Great Northern Railway. He was in Singapore for nearly two years before coming to Rangoon in 1908. While there, he was in charge of various engineering works for Messrs. Howarth Erskine, including the new bridge over the Singapore River, a astructure involving the erection of nearly 1,400 tons of steelwork.The manager for Burma is Mr. J. P.
